While many of these types of food are our favorites to cook and eat even on a daily basis, dog parents must understand that our furry friends have a different metabolism than humans. And certain foods in our daily pantry can be harmful for dog’s health. Here I share the 10 human foods that are dangerous to dogs to consume.
1. Avocado
Avocados contain a toxin called persin, which can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and even be deadly for dogs. Additionally, the high fat content in avocados puts them at risk of pancreatitis.
2. Cherries
The stems, leaves, and pits of cherries contain cyanide, a potentially deadly chemical. Cyanide interferes with oxygen utilization in tissues. Even the fleshy part around the pit should be avoided due to the risk of choking.
3. Grapes and Raisins
Both grapes and raisins are highly toxic to dogs. Ingesting just a few can lead to sudden kidney failure. Keep these fruits far out of your dog’s reach.
4. Tomatoes
While fully ripened tomatoes are safe, the green part of the plant contains a substance called solanine, which is toxic to dogs. It’s best to avoid tomatoes altogether.
5. Mushrooms
Avoid feeding your dog any mushrooms. Some mushroom species are poisonous, and even a small amount can be fatal. Identifying safe varieties can be challenging, so it’s safer to steer clear.
6. Onions
Onions contain a compound that damages dogs’ red blood cells, leading to anemia. Be cautious and avoid feeding anything containing onion, onion powder, or onion flakes.
7. Chocolate
Contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs.
8. Macadamia nuts
Can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in dogs.
9. Raw dough
Can expand in the stomach and cause bloating and discomfort, as well as produce alcohol as it ferments, which can lead to alcohol poisoning.
10. Bones
Cooked bones can break apart and cause internal injuries or blockages. You may cook the bones into broth but make sure to remove all bones.
Remember, if your dog ingests something toxic, contact your vet, an emergency animal clinic, or an animal poison control center promptly.
Finally, I know it can be tempting to share a small bite of your food to your dogs, after all, they look up to us and admire everything we do and consume. But just think you will not want to harm your dog in any way. In doubt, it’s always better to reach for dog treats instead of sharing human food.
