Choosing A High Quality Crate For An Extra Large Dog

When I adopted Cooper from the local shelter, he was about 3 months old. I was not looking for a large dog because I didn’t have enough space to have anything bigger than a small poodle.

Walking through the isles at the shelter and seeing the sad puppy faces it was definitely hard not to feel helpless wishing I could leave
with 10 dogs instead of 1. Cooper was so tiny in this giant crate, and I knew I had to take him home with me. I also noticed his giant paws for a tiny 3 month old puppy then I thought to myself…. God I am in trouble but I had to bring him home!

After about 8 months, I knew Cooper was going to be a massive dog and sure enough he was. He is a small size horse pretty much. Everything I got for him had to be extra large. Extra large toys, extra large bag of foods and extra large crate!

Here, I am going to share my experience on choosing the right crate for an extra-large dog.

These oversized puppies often need more space to move around comfortably, making the selection process crucial for their well-being. From size and material to design and features, several factors play a significant role in finding the perfect crate for your extra-large furry friend.

Size Matters When Selecting A Crate For Your Extra-Large Dog

The crate should be spacious enough for the dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

Measure your dog from nose to tail and from the top of the head to the ground while standing to determine the appropriate dimensions. Additionally, consider the dog’s weight and breed to ensure the crate provides ample room for movement.

Crate Material

Crates are typically made from metal, plastic, or wood.

Metal crates, often constructed from steel wire or aluminum, are durable and provide excellent ventilation. They are suitable for dogs who may try to escape or chew through their crate.

Plastic crates offer more privacy and security, which can help calm anxious dogs. They are also lightweight and easy to clean.

Wood crates provide a more aesthetically pleasing option and can blend seamlessly with home décor, but they may not be as durable or easy to clean as metal or plastic crates.

The Crate’s Design And Features

Look for crates with sturdy latches and doors that can withstand the strength of an extra-large dog.

A secure locking mechanism is essential to prevent escape and ensure the dog’s safety. Additionally, consider whether the crate has removable trays or floors for easy cleaning, as well as any additional features like divider panels or wheels for added convenience.

It’s essential to choose a crate that provides proper ventilation to keep your dog comfortable and prevent overheating. Look for crates with ample ventilation holes or slats on all sides to allow for adequate airflow.

Avoid crates with solid walls that restrict airflow, as they can cause the interior to become hot and stuffy, especially for larger breeds that generate more body heat.

Consider the dog’s temperament and behavior when selecting a crate. Some dogs may feel more secure in enclosed crates with solid walls, while others may prefer the openness of wire crates that allow them to see their surroundings.

If your dog is prone to anxiety or aggression, a crate with solid walls may help them feel more secure and prevent them from feeling overwhelmed by their environment.

Finally, consider your budget when choosing a crate for your extra-large dog
. Prices can vary widely depending on the size, material, and features of the crate. While it’s important to invest in a quality crate that meets your dog’s needs, there are options available at every price point.

Consider your priorities and weigh them against the cost to find the best crate within your budget.
