Are Essential Oils Are Safe For Dogs And How To Apply?

I am someone who loves spoiling my dogs and keeping them fresh and clean.

Dogs need our help when it comes to maintaining their healthy coat and even their overall smell.  Dogs don’t care how they smell like but we people do!

So, many times I opt for  lighting  candle or a oil infuser in the house. However, you know that sometimes candles aren’t always safe around dogs and they can get too close to candles by accident.

And sometimes I may spray my own cologne on my dogs… just a dash but later realized I should not do that.  

So are there any essential oils safe for dogs?  What are the benefits when applied to dogs?

Yes, some oils are perfectly fine for dogs, but it’s crucial to use them safely and with proper precautions.

Here are some guidelines to keep in mind:

Dilution: Always dilute essential oils before using them on dogs. Most essential oils are highly concentrated and can be too strong for their sensitive skin. Mix a few drops of the essential oil with a carrier oil (such as coconut oil or olive oil) before applying it.

Application Methods:

1. • Topical: Apply diluted essential oils to your dog’s skin or fur. You can massage it into their coat or use it as a spray.
   • Diffusion: Use a diffuser to disperse the oil into the air. Make sure the concentration is low, and the scent isn’t overwhelming for your dog.
   • Inhalation: You can let your dog inhale the aroma by placing a drop of diluted oil on a cloth or near their resting area.

Lavender 

Calming and soothing. Helps with anxiety and stress.

Chamomile

Anti-inflammatory and gentle. Good for skin irritations.

Cedarwood

Repels insects and has a calming effect.

Peppermint

Can soothe upset stomachs and repel bugs.

Essential Oils to Avoid:

• • Citrus Oils: Lemon, orange, and grapefruit oils can be toxic to dogs.
  • Eucalyptus: Can cause respiratory issues.
  • Rosemary: May cause seizures in some dogs.
  • Bergamot: Can irritate the skin.
  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca): Toxic to dogs.

Remember that every dog is different, and some may be more sensitive than others.

Always consult with your veterinarian before using any essential oils on your furry friend. If you notice any adverse reactions, discontinue use immediately.
