However, among the excitement, it’s crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of our furry companions. From high temperatures to seasonal hazards, summer can pose unique challenges for pets.

Hydration is Key
Just like us, pets need plenty of water to stay hydrated in the heat. Ensure your pet always has access to fresh, clean water, both indoors and outdoors. Yeti bowls are some of our favorites as they are durable and stylish.
When going on walks or outings, bring a portable water bowl and offer frequent water breaks to prevent dehydration.
Never Leave Pets in Hot Cars
The interior of a car can quickly reach dangerous temperatures, even on moderately warm days. Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car, even for a short period.
On hot days, it’s best to leave your pet at home or find pet-friendly establishments to enjoy together.
Provide Shade and Shelter
When spending time outdoors, make sure your pet has access to shade areas where they can escape the sun’s direct heat. There is easy and low cost solutions in case your back patio is exposed.
If your pet spends time in the yard, ensure not only a shelter space but also a well-ventilated doghouse or a porch, where they can rest comfortably.
Protect Against Sunburn
Pets with light-colored fur or thin coats are susceptible to sunburn, especially on their ears, noses, and other exposed areas. Here are my recommendations for sun protection for nose, paws, and coat.
Use pet-safe sunscreen on sensitive areas, and limit sun exposure during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
Exercise Caution on Hot Surfaces
Asphalt and concrete can become scorching hot in the summer sun, causing burns to your pet’s paw pads.
Opt for a cooling blanket and water proof (see selection below)early morning or late evening walks when surfaces are cooler, or stick to grassy areas.
Beware of Heatstroke
Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition that can occur when pets become overheated. Watch for signs such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and vomiting.
If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool, shaded area, offer water to drink, and seek veterinary care immediately.
Prevent Parasites and Pests
Warmer weather brings out fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, which can transmit diseases to pets.
Use vet-approved flea and tick preventatives, and consider using mosquito repellents specifically formulated for pets.
